The Knockout by Sajni Patel5/8/2023 Kareena's bid for the Olympics could very well make history-if she has the courage to go for it. Admitting her feelings for Amit will cost Kareena more than just her pride-she'll have to face his parents' disapproval, battle her own insecurities, and remain focused for the big fight. Which is inconvenient, since she's starting to fall for Amit Patel, who just might be the world's most perfect Indian. Despite pleasing her parents, excelling at school, and making plans to get her family out of debt, Kareena's never felt quite Indian enough, and her training is only making it worse. If only her sport weren't seen as something too rough for girls, something she's afraid to share with anyone outside of her family. She's landed the chance of a lifetime, an invitation to the US Muay Thai Open, which could lead to a spot on the first-ever Olympic team. If seventeen-year-old Kareena Thakkar is going to alienate herself from the entire Indian community, she might as well do it gloriously. fiction contemporary romance young adult emotional medium-paced. The alice network by kate quinn5/8/2023 The story is told in two different timelines. I totally thought the Prince Phillip aspect in the novel was fictional! Reading the story, I had no idea that one character in particular, Osla Kendall, is a lightly fictionalized version of Osla Benning, a heiress who worked as a codebreaker and also dated Prince Phillip at the same time. Including the fact that each of the three female characters were influenced by real people in some way or another. Well, no need (if you don’t want to) with The Rose Code because there’s a ton of information in the author’s note. Usually after I read historical fiction, I Google about the event or person. The paperback is 624 pages! I think about 150 pages could have been shaved off while still maintaining the integrity of the story. But like The Huntress, I think it’s too long. The Rose Code is another standout novel with rich historical details and engaging characters. War and peace penguin clothbound5/8/2023 And as the novel progresses, these characters transcend their specificity, becoming some of the most moving-and human-figures in world literature. As Napoleon's army invades, Tolstoy brilliantly follows characters from diverse backgrounds-peasants and nobility, civilians and soldiers-as they struggle with the problems unique to their era, their history, and their culture. Translated by Louise and Aylmer Maude War and Peace broadly focuses on Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812 and follows three of the most well-known characters in literature: Pierre Bezukhov, the illegitimate son of a count who is fighting for his inheritance and yearning for spiritual fulfillment Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, who leaves his family behind to fight in the war against Napoleon and Natasha Rostov, the beautiful young daughter of a nobleman who intrigues both men. Love & olives by jenna evans welch5/8/2023 Because as Liv slowly begins to discover, her father may not have invited her to Greece for Atlantis, but for something much more important. But not everything on the Greek island is as perfect as it seems. She also definitely doesn’t want Theo, her father’s charismatic so-called protégé, to witness her struggle.Įven so, she can't help but be charmed by everything Santorini has to offer-the beautiful sunsets, the turquoise water, the sun-drenched villages, and the delicious cuisine. When she arrives in gorgeous Santorini, things are just as awkward as she'd imagined. So when teenage Liv suddenly receives a postcard from her father, who explains that National Geographic is supporting a documentary about his theories on Atlantis-and asks if she will fly out to Greece and help-Liv is less than thrilled. Santorini felt like an island holding its breath. The age of light by whitney scharer5/8/2023 Through it all, Lee must grapple with the question of whether it's possible to reconcile romantic desire with artistic ambition-and what she will have to sacrifice to do so. Lee's journey takes us from the cabarets of bohemian Paris to the battlefields of war-torn Europe during WWII, from discovering radical new photography techniques to documenting the liberation of the concentration camps as one of the first female war correspondents. But Man Ray turns out to be an egotistical, charismatic force, and as they work together in the darkroom, their personal and professional lives become intimately entwined, changing the course of Lee's life forever. Though he wants to use her only as a model, Lee convinces him to take her on as his assistant and teach her everything he knows. "I'd rather take a photograph than be one," she declares after she arrives in Paris in 1929, where she soon catches the eye of the famous Surrealist Man Ray. From the moment I began reading The Age of Light until the last page of this story came to a close, I was mesmerized and captivated by Scharers fictional account of photographer/model, Lee Miller, and the men for whom she was a muse, most significantly, iconic Surrealistic photographer, Man Ray. She went to Paris to start over, to make art instead of being made into it.Ī captivating debut novel by Whitney Scharer, The Age of Light tells the story of Vogue model turned renowned photographer Lee Miller, and her search to forge a new identity as an artist after a life spent as a muse.
